rick and company should have just taken alexandria to begin with. sure some of the town wouldnt have survived. but those who did would have fallen in line faster behind rick and they would have been better prepared for negan. afterall when rick and his group were on the move they were able to defeat most enemies even when they found themselves unarmed. complacency is what lead to negan defeating them and taking their stuff.

Can we all acknowledge that the town knew he was a wife beater and let it happen. They were all degenerates

Upon looking at this scene fresh after so long…it’s actually pretty obvious that Rick won this fight and needed no assistance from anyone. Context is important. Pete is a pretty large guy who is not holding back and is mentally unstable filled with rage while Rick is willfully playing up the sherif role for the town trying to appease them with a sense of order and peacekeeping. “Feral Rick” is not the one in this scene fighting Pete. Meaning Rick is not going for the jugular to end the fight permanently as he would’ve on the road prior to being in this town and playing up this new role. Rick tackles Pete out of a window and the two are strangling each other with no one necessarily overpowering the other. The moment Pete knocks away his wife, Rick takes advantage of the moment to turn Pete to the ground. The two are still in equal spots of strangling each other. Carl comes over and distracts which Pete then takes advantage of to try to turn the tables around just like Rick did on him but it doesn’t work. Rick isn’t playing the peace keeping police anymore. He overpowers Pete switching positions into a chokehold. Now look at how the camera focuses on Rick’s facial expression shift and the red balloon imagery. Rick isn’t hiding his true nature being in the wild anymore. He’s about to switch to killer mode until [forgot the woman’s name] slightly snaps him out of it by calling out to him. Listen to the tone of his voice and what he says in this moment to Pete… “Touch me again and I will KILL YOU”. Pete is defeated here and was likely about to die with no one jumping into help either Rick or Pete. They both had the same distraction advantage to turn the fight to their favor and Rick still overpowered him and had him dead to rights. And all of this was started with him trying to initially calm the situation. I think it’s clear…Rick won and didn’t need help. -Alternate Version: But I would do something just a tad bit different to empathize Rick's complete dominance in the fight by having just a tiny bit more dialogue inserted and more of Rick being on top of things. Rick, after tackling Pete through the window could be above him telling him "I am trying not to kill you right now but you're gonna force my hand". This is when Pete's wife can start crying and yells "Please stop" which causes Rick to turn around to her briefly giving Pete the advantage of turning Rick around to the ground for a few seconds trying to choke him. However, Rick immediately knocks him back over, gets on top and sinisterly whispers "I warned you" then switches into a chokehold just like in the episode. The rest of the scene can continue forward with the balloon imagery and everything just as it did. Doing it this way would completely stop the naysayers from thinking Rick was actually genuinely struggling and instead emphasize his complete dominance in the fight. Again, I do think Rick did indeed win the fight fair and square, but they could've just spotlight that formidability of Rick just a tad more with a little tweaking.

What convinced the bad guy to go along with the good guy is because the good guy, Dan, SHOWED HIM he was a good & honorable person. It inspired the bad guy, it had an effect. It made him change sides. Anyone worth having on your side should be the people who are inspired to change by this.
